AI, Human Rights & Education

This curriculum invites learners to explore the ethical and human rights dimensions of artificial intelligence. Developed by PedagogyFutures and Human Rights Education Associates (HREA), it empowers educators and students to critically engage with how AI shapes society, from education to governance, public services, and civil liberties. Through interactive lessons and real-world case studies, participants build essential literacy around AI’s potential and risks, all grounded in a commitment to dignity, justice, and informed civic participation.

This project is a special collaboration between PedagogyFutures and Human Rights Education Associates (HREA). Through education, training and capacity-building activities, HREA supports rights-holders – in particular youth, women and members of vulnerable groups – in claiming their human rights and duty-bearers including governments, government officials and local authorities – in fulfilling their human rights obligations.

Why we developed this curriculum

  • The rapid advancement of AI technology is presenting immense challenges and opportunities for human society.
  • A critical perspective is necessary. Human rights is a helpful framework from which to guide the discussion on AI’s societal impacts and choices made in one’s personal and professional lives.
  • Key human rights like the right to education, privacy, work, and more could be threatened by AI technology. At the same time, AI can support the realization of certain human rights.
  • Today’s educators and learners must be prepared to navigate a society where AI is impacting their schools, work, and civic participation.

Who is this curriculum for?

This curriculum is designed for use in various educational settings, including formal and nonformal secondary and post-secondary education. The lessons were developed for learners 13+ but contain suggestions for how the curriculum can be adapted for younger learners. The module can also be used as professional development for educators and practitioners.

What's Included

This curriculum consists of 6 lessons designed to take 50 minutes each. Every lesson contains: 

  • A detailed lesson plan (including key questions, learning objectives and materials required)
  • Handout(s)
  • A slide deck
  • Suggested homework assignment 

The lessons are activity oriented and have actionable steps for implementation alongside online resources to learn more about each topic.

Nina has an MA in International Educational Development from Teachers College at Columbia University and has worked for many years in education and nonprofit program management. Currently, she serves as the Director of Curriculum & Instruction at Pedagogy.Cloud where she helps educators navigate the world of AI through workshops and online courses, curriculum and policy resources, and research. FELISA TIBBITTS

Chair in Human Rights Education and UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Higher Education, Utrecht University

Dr. Felisa Tibbitts, a leading HRE expert, is UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Higher Education and Chair in Human Rights Education at the Human Rights Centre of Utrecht University (Netherlands). She is also a Visiting Professor at Nelson Mandela University (South Africa) and director of Human Rights Education Associates (HREA), which she co-founded in 1996. Felisa has worked many years in teacher training and developed numerous curricula and resources with a human rights focus. Most recently she was the lead author for UNESCO’s Greening Curriculum Guidance. LinkedIn
